Toyota Supra MK4 Summary
Design & Chassis
The Toyota Supra MK4 came with a distinctive aerodynamic design that was inspired by the Toyota 2000GT. Toyota’s lead designer Isao Tsuzuki lead the design team for the development of this sports car. It came with a long hood and a short rear deck that gave it a sleek and aerodynamic look. Its unique double-bubble roofline gave it a sporty appearance. It came with a rear spoiler that was designed to maintain stability at high speeds. In order to shed weight the Toyota Supra MK4 used lightweight materials like an aluminium hood, magnesium alloy wheels, and a plastic fuel tank. It was built on the Lexus SC platform but it was slightly shorter in length.
Engine & Performance
This iconic sports car was powered by a 3.0-litre, inline-6 cylinder engine with 24 valves and a DOHC setup. Its intercooled engine came with twin turbochargers and a port fuel injection system. Toyota Supra MK4 produced 320 hp of maximum power at 5,600 rpm and 427.08 Nm of maximum torque at 4,000 rpm. It was based on a rear-wheel drivetrain and it came paired with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. Toyota also offered this sports car with a 4-speed automatic transmission which was not quite popular among buyers. It accelerated to 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.6 seconds while to breach the 100 mph mark it took just 11.1 seconds. With a top speed of 160 mph (257 kmph), the Toyota Supra MK4 was one of the fastest sports cars of its time.
Brakes & Suspension
It came with a rack and pinion-type power-assisted steering like the modern Toyota Harrier. The Toyota Supra MK4 was equipped with a high-performance braking setup with vacuum assist and ABS on all four wheels. Its braking system included 12.7-inch ventilated disc brakes on the front wheels and 12.8-inch ventilated disc brakes on the rear wheels. Its front discs featured 4-piston callipers while the rear discs were fitted with 2-piston callipers. Toyota Supra MK4 came with a control arm type front suspension and a multi-link type rear suspension.
Even though it was built on the same platform as the Lexus SC coupe, it had smaller dimensions. The Supra MK4 measured 4,514 mm in total length and 1,811 mm in total width. It had a wheelbase of 2,550 mm and its total height was 1,275 mm. This sports car weighed only 1,565 kg owning to the various measures taken to shed weight during its design. Even though it was a performance-oriented car, it offered a generous boot space of 283 litres. It was capable of accommodating 4 people and it had a fuel tank capacity of 80 litres. The Toyota Supra MK4 came with alloy wheels like the Dodge muscle cars with Bridgestone Potenza RE020 tyres.
Toyota Supra MK4 Price and Launch In India
After extensive research and development, Toyota launched the MK4 Supra in American and certain European markets. This iconic car was never launched in the Indian market by the brand. Obviously, it wouldn’t make any sense due to the almost non-existent demand for sports cars in the Indian market. At the time of launch, its price ranged between $40,000-42,000 in the international markets. The Toyota Supra MK4 price in India would have been nearly Rs 13.02 Lakh if it was launched. A lot of time has passed since it was launched and now this car commands a very premium price tag in the second-hand market.
Is the Toyota Supra MK4 Any Good?
Toyota put a lot of effort into the design and engineering of this 4th generation Supra. Without a doubt the Supra MK4, in every aspect it was the best Supra ever. It came with a furious 3-litre twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that pumped out 320 horsepower. This Japanese sports car offered amazing performance figures that bettered the V8-powered muscle cars like Ford Mustang back in the day. A lightweight and aerodynamic design gave it sharp handling and it was equipped with a very powerful braking system. The Toyota Supra MK4 is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time and it is still a dream car for many car enthusiasts.
